OUR STORY
It’s the name of Lona’s (the founder) stepmother Natuo spelt backwards. Ooutan in creole, Lona’s second spoken language, means “You Hear” or “Did You Hear”. Natuo loved sewing and did it all her life. She would make her children’s clothing and also made clothing for other people in the community that were not able to afford clothing for themselves. Lona always remembered that the school uniforms were a little too big and the designs were a little outdated so at the age of nine she decided to start sewing her own.
Growing up, Lona’s mother could not afford to get her uniforms or even shoes for school. Throughout her life she would meet many other kids, like herself, that were in need so she began making them uniforms and other clothing. Lona migrated to Canada to find a better life for herself and her children. She frequently helps the homeless by giving them clothing and other apparel that she has made herself.
Ooutan is a family owned brand, founded by Lona with the help of her Common law. He has been a major supporter in her work, and the driving force that encouraged her to start her own business. Owning a business has been a dream of Lona’s for as long as she can remember. Lona has always been very independent and found it hard to work for others, she found that she was not able to express her creativity. This Brand is a way to help her support herself but also, it’s her way of giving back to the Canadian economy and supporting the homeless community something that she is passionate about.
The inspiration for our logo came from this drawing. It was drawn by Lona's 13 year old daughter.
The Mountains and the maple leaves in our logo are meant to be a representation of Canada our current home. The two mountains and its triangular shape also represents the Pitons of St. Lucia, Lona’s past home.
